Testimonials

Your group is a positive, joyful inspiration for volunteerism.

Volunteer Coordinator, Habitat for Humanity - Tulsa, Oklahoma

This past spring, I went on an ASB trip, and it was perhaps the most memorable, exciting, and rewarding experience of my life. And truthfully (and surprisingly), I think I enjoyed that one-week adventure more than my month-long study abroad experience in Ireland. The people I went with were fantastic as well as open-minded, eager to learn and volunteer. I cannot put into words how amazing this ASB trip was, and my only regret is waiting until my last semester of college to go. I would encourage every student at UIC to go on an ASB trip if possible. It is a life-changing experience in which you get to learn about another culture or society, participate in community service, and meet some great people along the way.

I have become more aware of people in-need outside of my surroundings. I did not know much about AIDS awareness or the economic or socio-political situations of Native Americans in reservations until I participated on the spring break trips. Alternative Spring Break has really 'opened my eyes' to social concerns outside of where I live, and I believe that everyone should engage in such an experience not only to become more aware, but to have the opportunity to create positive changes in the world they live in.

Alternative Spring Break is a unique opportunity to witness first-hand the troubles our country faces by working with some amazing organizations. I always came home feeling how that one week was very special not only because of the help I provided but also because of the team of individuals that came together to accomplish something that will resonate outside our own lives. I am more aware of the need for social activism than ever before and feel that giving back is a responsbility we are all called upon. These are life lessons that cannot be taught in a classroom and because of that ASB will always be one of the greatest things that has ever happened to me.

ASB has helped me see the beauty and strength of people all over America!

This organization brings together a diverse group of students and challenges them to unify for a greater purpose. It brings out the best of people in the worst of circumstances. This organization challenged me to step up as a leader, get out of my comfort zone, and inspired me to grow as an individual.

I feel privileged to work with an outstanding volunteer group like yours. You all helped the Eucha community come a long way down the road to getting that community building finished, and I cannot thank you enough. I do hope we remain life-long friends.

ASB is important because it's a unique organization that helps enhance your life. You meet real people from different parts of the country and are instantly welcomed into their lives. I consider myself fairly well-traveled, but I have to admit that ASB trips have been some of the most meaningful voyages I have embarked upon. After four trips, I can honestly say that I would still be restless to gear up again if international waters did not deny me the satisfaction" To connect with communities across America through service is the most amazing feeling. The fact that it took two-and-a-half hours, through hugs and tears, to say goodbye to our newfound friends on the Reservation is quite telling.

I always knew I had a heart for service, but I never had the chance to fully follow that dream until I spent a week in the neighborhoods of West Philadelphia through ASB. I learned about the healthcare issues facing these communities while becoming so close to the fellow students I was volunteering with. I am proud to say that my goals of being a legal advocate to the underserved were born from service trips like these.

The commitment of students to Alternative Spring Break has been nothing short of phenomenal. For the last ten years, I have been privileged to serve as the group's advisor. When they [trip participants] come back from their trips, the stories they tell are inspirational and heartwarming. These students exemplify the very essence of service and giving back. Once again, I am proud to be their advisor, and have been since day one of ASB's existence at UIC.
